GEORGE MICHAEL

Il vero nome di George Michael è Georgios Kyriakos Panayotou, è nato il 25 giugno 1963 a North London in Inghilterra. La sua è una famiglia della media borghesia. Suo padre operaio è di origine greco-cipriota. Nel quartiere di North London conosce Andrew Ridgely, studente della stessa scuola da lui frequentata, la Bushey Meads Comprehensive School. E' il 1975. Quattro anni più tardi, il 5 novembre, fondano, insieme a Paul Ridgely, fratello di Andrew, David Mortimer e Andrew Leaver, un gruppo a cui danno il nome di THE EXECUTIVE; fanno musica ska senza però ottenere molta fortuna. Il 24 marzo dell'82 George e Andrew incidono un demo col nome di WHAM! che li porta a firmare un contratto con la INNERVISIONS. Il 28 maggio viene pubblicato in Inghilterra il loro primo

singolo, "Wham Rap!", ma è con "Young Guns Go For It" che le vendite salgono alle stelle. Nel febbraio dell'83 viene ripubblicato il primo singolo che arriva all'ottavo posto della classifica inglese. I singoli che seguono sono "Bad Boys", che George propone come il manifesto della sua generazione, e "Club Tropicana". Esce quindi il loro primo album FANTASTIC. Il successo crescente li porta ad abbandonare la piccola etichetta della INNERVISION per passare alla CBS. Intanto nel luglio dell'84 viene pubblicato in Inghilterra il primo lavoro solista di George, il singolo "Careless Whisper", canzone da lui scritta all'età di diciassette anni. In America è pubblicata come "Wham! Featuring George Michael".
